Solidarity with Shanghai Blood Center (& people of China)!

Dear Dr. Ming,

I am writing this mail on behalf of Governing Council of AATM to show solidarity with Shanghai Blood Center and its staff (per se Chinese nationals) during this difficult time of N-corona virus epidemic. We need to learn a lot from Chinese people how you have dealt with the situation, containing virus spread and coming back to normalcy again! You may have a difficult time in obtaining blood/ apheresis donors, to maintain supply chain to hospital and also to treat unknown consequences of viral infections. This is a very serious medical emergency especially to transfusion services to find out many answers of unknown questions (donor deferral criteria/ inventory/ logistics/ transfusion to infected persons etc.). Our countries may also face same or similar situations in future. Probably, we need to focus on research and developing new strategies in such situations.

As a Transfusion Medicine organization, we stand solidly behind you! Please let us know if you need any assistance from any one of us. We pray to God for peace to departed souls in untimely loss of precious human life and speedy recovery of all infected persons with this viral disease.

Warm regards,

Dr. N. Choudhury
President,
Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine (AATM),

Dear Dr. Choudhury,

Many thanks for your mail, and solidarity from AATM and member organizations. Indeed the epidemy of the N-coronavirus has causes extra challenges to blood services in China, fewer donor show up due to concerns on their own health (immunities), or community isolations. On the other hand, there are risks of blood component expiration as some hospitals concentrate their abilities in combating virus, and provide less routine services.

In assisting and guiding blood services, on the Tuesday last week, CSBT published a Recommendation for Blood Collection and Supply during N-coronavirus Epidemy. It contains six chapters, with focuses on Donor counseling and selection, self-deferral after donation, mobilization and service, inventory and balance, personnel protection, management issues. We suggested a 28 day deferral for potential donors counting since the time they left epidemy areas, or had close contact with suspected individuals. Donors are advised to call back if they become symptomatic or develop any abnormalities within 14 days after donation.

All blood services are doing their best in coping with their local situations and difficulties. We will monitor closely for any new developments, and if any further assistances we can provide.

Once again I want to thank you for your concerns. With your support, we shall prevail.

With best regards,

Ming
