Honorable Dr Jin, Dr. Lv, Dr. Wang, Madam Zhong
Respected leaders, distinguished guests,
Dear voluntary donors, volunteer workers, colleagues and friends,
Good morning!
On behalf of the event organizer, Shanghai Blood Center, also the WHO Collaborating Center for Blood Transfusion Services, It is my privilege to welcome and thank you again for your time and efforts of coming all the way from different parts of the world and all over the country, for joining the celebration of the World Blood Donor Day 2015, and the Global Launch Event.
Shanghai Blood Center was one of the pioneer organizations participated the celebration and promotion of the very first WBDD 12 years ago. Also participated were quite some blood services in China, in 2004 and ever since.
In 2008 and 2010, SBC hosted two National Events as entrusted by MoH. The one in 2010 was organized in collaboration with WHO. It was during the Shanghai EXPO. For the first time in the history, WBDD was celebrated inside of EXPO site. This building was called China Pavilion at these days, the celebration was at the United Nations' Pavilion, only hundreds of meters away from here.
Blood donation saves millions of lives every year. Blood donation and blood service take courage, passions and, sometimes opportunities. Like Mr. Armero and many others in the room, I myself am a regular blood donor too. In fact I am a winner of the National Gold Award for Blood Donors, and the National Contribution Award for Promoting Voluntary Blood donation, which was issued 3 days ago.
We all know WBDD became an annual event because of the World Health Assembly resolution WHA58.13 in 2005. But only a few know that the resolution was based on a proposal numbered EB115/9 from executive board, and the proposal itself was the result of a working meeting on November 10th, 2004 among the four sponsoring organizations, WHO, IFRC, FIODS and ISBT. I am so proud to be part of the discussion by representing ISBT to the meeting.
Looking back the courses of the last 12 years, we see higher number and percentage of voluntary donations at global, regional and national levels. Yet, as identified at the round table discussion yesterday morning, still so many challenges along the way towards the targets set by the Melbourne Declaration at the 6th WBDD in 2009, which calls for 100% voluntary donation by 2020, and safe and adequate blood supply in all member states. This is why we need to keep on hard works and celebrate WBDD year after year, and why we need to stay together, work together and help each other.
I want to thank WHO for choosing Shanghai, China as the host city and country for this year's Global Launch Event;
Thank all the participants in this room, and in front of web-TV for your involvement, I hope your expectations have been met.
Meanwhile, I want to thank leaders of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning for your guidance. Thank respected donors, volunteers, media and journalists, all other institutions and individuals, for your support and help in so many years.
Finally, to my team members, co-workers and volunteers from SBC. You have been working so hard, and painstakingly in the last couple of months, days and nights, to design and put together this global event and other activities associated, lasting from yesterday morning till tonight.
You are all so awesome and great! Thank you so very much and I love you all!
